SABA, based in Dinxperlo is a renowned manufacturer of adhesives and sealants. To meet the increasing demand for their quality products, they invested in a new production hall. To make the filling of these adhesives and sealants in IBCs and drums as automated and efficient as possible, Dutch Saba called on Robbe Industries.

Saba has been in business since 1933 and employs some 200 people worldwide. The adhesives and sealants produced are used in mattresses, transportation and construction industries, among others. It produces up to 13 million kg per year, making it a global player. In the coming years, the company plans to increase production to 15 to 20 million kg. To meet the increase in production, the decision was made to install a new building containing a streamlined and advanced production process. Together with Robbe Industries, we looked at how this could be realized.

For this project, it was chosen to install two roller conveyor lines per mixer. This allows multiple empty IBCsto be fitted and buffered. The filling itself is done automatically by weight. After filling, the IBC or pallet of drums slides through to the handling position. Meanwhile, the filling of a new IBC can be started. After this, a buffer is provided on the line for filled packages. One operator can thus operate two lines.

There are a total of eight roller conveyor lines for five mixers. There is also another filling position with an industrial scale for test products. Taken together, these are nine filling stations. These are managed from one central Siemens PLC. Each filling unit has its own HMI touch screen so that it can be easily operated by the operator.

The central PLC control that monitors all filling lines is also connected to the overhead ERP/MES system. This link was custom written and ensures that the operator on the Robbe HMIs also sees all the info from the underlying work orders. Conversely, all production data is reported to the parent system.

Liquid filling is done with different technologies. On the one hand, several filling lines were equipped with a custom-built dosing system; on the other hand, two proven Robbe Neptune filling arms were also deployed. The Neptune filling arms are ideally suited for ergonomically and efficiently filling multiple drums on a pallet.
