Company
Bruins Veem

Bruins Veem BV has been active in the storage and transshipment of bulk goods for more than 50 years. They also do repackaging and have their own container terminal. The family business is now based at two locations (Zaandam and Wormerveer).

For better filling of big bags, Bruins Veems got in touch with Robbe Industries NV about ten years ago. The company was then looking for a way to fill tight bigbags. Because of the height of the bigbags and the flowing behavior of the product, it was very difficult to fill manually stable bigbags efficiently. In fact, it is very important that the filled bigbags are stable on the pallet in order not to have accidents during loading and manipulation with forklifts. As an additional challenge, the bigbag filling machine at Bruins had to be placed under an existing silo and the filling zone was Atex zoned.

The Bruins company has since continued to grow and there was a demand for a new filling line to produce even more big bags. Because of the good cooperation, Robbe Industries was again called upon for this. Even more automation was chosen for this new filling line. For example, they wanted to place the empty pallets on the machine automatically instead of manually. A cardboard sheet is also placed on each pallet. They would have liked this operation to be automated as well. They also wanted to be able to buffer more filled big bags on the discharge roller conveyors.

In recent years, Robbe Industries NV has specialized more and more in automation and was thus able to design and build this complete filling line itself. Each machine in this line was carefully built by Robbe Industries to withstand the demanding environment.

The filling line was built in a straight line, optimally constructed according to the available space. On the right side, the deployment of empty pallets is done with a forklift. The operators therefore no longer have to drag empty pallets and a great deal of time is saved with this. The automatic pallet dispenser is suitable for working with several types of pallets and can be set manually according to the pallets used. When in operation, the machine is closely monitored by a safety light curtain.

The automatic pallet dispenser is suitable for working with several types of pallets and can be set manually according to the pallets used. When in operation, the machine is closely monitored by a safety light curtain.

After the pallet is automatically unstacked, it moves one position down the line. Here, a cardboard sheet is automatically placed on the empty pallet. The function of this cardboard sheet is to protect the bigbag from the wood of the pallet. Using vacuum technology and suction cups, the machine picks up the sheet and places it on the empty pallet.

The empty pallet with cardboard sheet then slides through to the bigbag filling machine. The operator has a stack of empty big bags nearby and attaches the empty big bag to the machine. Since dust-free filling is very important, the filling hose is sealed with an inflatable bellows. The machine then automatically fills the bigbag to the desired filling weight. During filling, the bigbag is manipulated several times to obtain a tight and stable filled bigbag. The machine is able to lift the bigbag at the loops during and after filling. This tightens the bag and creates a stable shape. The granulometry of the product to be filled is very small; in other words, the product is very dusty. Several measures were taken for this during the design of the machine. Robbe Industries has a great know-how in filling dusty products in big bags due to its many years of experience.

After filling, the hooks from which the bigbag hangs will open automatically and the machine then moves the bigbag’s suspension frame up so that the pallet with filled bigbag can be discharged. Meanwhile, a new empty pallet with cardboard sheet was created and it can now move directly to the filling position so that a new package can be filled immediately

After the filling position, there are a number of buffer positions where the filled big bags wait until they are taken away with a forklift to be transported to the warehouse.

The entire filling line was built by Robbe Industries NV. The electrical control and programming was also made in-house. There is one central Siemens PLC that controls the entire line. The operator can conveniently control the entire filling line with one screen. Each roller conveyor is equipped with a frequency control. In addition, there is also logging of the number of big bags produced with various production data. This can also be retrieved via the remote access module. The same remote access module can also be used to perform service remotely.

The filling machine was again placed in ATEX zoning. The filling machine was metrologically calibrated as an OIML R61 Gravimetric Dispenser by Robbe Industries’s internal inspection service.
